Specification consistency is the single biggest quality lever across Permobil’s product range – and it’s also the most overlooked.
Over 12% of first deliveries failed specification checks in 2024. That number came from my own audit log, not industry averages. When you’re reviewing 200+ unique items each year – from the M3 Corpus battery to anesthesia machines, fundus cameras, and backup camera systems – the pattern is clear: small spec deviations in one component cascade into large costs elsewhere.

What about backup cameras? We once tested a Permobil backup camera against the spec sheet: resolution said 720p, but the actual image showed noticeable color shift. I assumed the supplier used the same color calibration as our fundus camera vendor – that was wrong. The fundus camera requires color fidelity within Delta E 2 for retinal screening. The M3 Corpus battery needs capacity within ±2% and discharge voltage within 0.1V. Different numbers – same principle: verify, don’t assume.
Why does this matter? Because one off-spec component can compromise an entire care pathway. A stent – if you’re not familiar – is a small mesh tube used to prop open arteries. Permobil doesn’t make stents, but understanding their critical tolerances helps me appreciate why medical device specs are non-negotiable: a 1% variation in stent diameter can mean the difference between a successful procedure and a complication. That mindset carries back to wheelchair batteries.
I used to think “same specification” across vendors meant identical results. Didn’t verify. Turned out each had different interpretations of “50 Ah” – one used nominal, another used minimum. The surprise wasn’t the price difference; it was how much hidden value came with the “expensive” option – actual capacity, consistent testing, and traceable documentation.
The industry has evolved dramatically. In 2020, most Permobil power wheelchairs used sealed lead-acid batteries. By 2024, lithium-ion became the standard – lighter, longer lifespan, but more sensitive to BMS specs. The fundamentals haven’t changed (capacity, voltage, safety), but the execution has transformed. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. That’s why I update our spec templates every six months.
Boundary conditions: when specs alone aren’t enough
I’ll be honest – rigorous spec verification doesn’t catch everything. A few months ago, a batch of surgical light bulbs passed every electrical test but dimmed faster than expected under continuous use. The spec said “25,000 hours life,” but real-world conditions (heat, humidity, power fluctuations) shortened it. That kind of failure only surfaces in field data. No amount of incoming inspection predicts it perfectly.
So my rule now: spec verification is necessary, but not sufficient. Pair it with field performance monitoring. And if a vendor’s documentation uses vague language like “typical” or “nominal” without tolerances, flag it. That’s almost always a sign they haven’t validated the spec themselves.
The bottom line
If you’re buying or specifying Permobil products – whether it’s a backup camera, an M3 Corpus battery, an anesthesia machine, or a fundus camera – don’t trust the datasheet alone.
