  9. Review the installation specifications: electrical, ventilation, space, and weight.
  10. Request a sample or demo unit if possible—especially for capital equipment.
  11. Confirm the return policy and restocking fees before purchasing. If it's 20%, your "cheap" mistake just got expensive.
  12. Escalate any order over $5,000 for a second review by a peer.

Implementation isn't glamorous. We've caught 47 potential errors using this checklist in the past 18 months. That's 47 orders that didn't turn into problems.

Here's the thing: 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. Most of my mistakes were caught when it was too late because I didn't want to slow down the process. In medical equipment, slowing down is the fastest way to get it right.

Honestly, I'm not sure why medical device procurement is still so error-prone. My best guess is that the industry's sheer complexity overwhelms the usual purchase-order workflows. But the fix isn't complicated. It's just discipline.
